THE WAR IS OVER!!!!

*May 9, 1945*

The war in Europe is over!!! Momma and I heard it on the radio yesterday and we hope this means that Dad gets to come home soon now!!!! School got canceled for the day so I am home helping Momma with chores around the house. It is also pretty cool because Momma is letting me go over to my friend's house later. I also got a job for the summer. Well, its kind of an unofficial job because I am just babysitting but it means that I will be making my own money to help with ration stuff. I am hoping that this new event in the war will mean that candy won't be so expensive anymore.

I am really excited that Dad might be coming home soon. They are calling this day "Victory in Europe" day because it means the war is over in Europe. The last time we heard from Dad, he said that he was flying planes over Germany. This made Mom very worried because Germany is where most of the fighting is happening and when we went to the picture last week, she had to leave the movie theater when they showed the news clip of planes getting shot down. She is also worried because his last letter came in February. I know she is worried and so am I but Dad promised me he would come home and that he wouldn't miss another birthday.

Back in school

*August 30, 1944*

So school started again today and I already love being in sixth grade!! Technically, I am in middle school now except the 6th graders still are in the elementary building. 6th grade is so cool because I get to have four different teacher this year instead of just one like last year. The only thing bad about this is that Momma had to spend more money on my school supplies and we had to save our ration stamps up for a whole month to have enough to buy me new markers. Our renter made me a new outfit for the first day as a thank you for letting her stay with us. She is leaving tomorrow because her fiance is coming home from the war. He was on a ship in the Pacific.

So, even though I am now in 6th grade, my social studies teacher also tells us everyday about something that is happening in the war. Today, we learned about the liberation of Paris. She even showed us on the map that Paris is in France. My dad once wrote in a letter that he got to fly over Paris. I told this story to my whole class. Anyways, the liberation of Paris means we are getting close to the end of the war. It means that the Allies have taken back France's capital. Hope to write soon but its dinner time.

It's summer!!!

*June 10, 1944*
I figured that I better write in this journal at least once this summer so I picked today because its rainy outside. Momma is quite busy around the house which means I also get to do a lot of work. We recently took in a renter who is this really young lady from the big city. She is lots of fun but it means that I have to do more work around the house and help Momma make dinner since there are more people in the house now. Since school is out, I have so much time to do other things that are really fun like going to the store and getting Cokes with my friends, swimming down in the lake, and riding my bike everywhere. I am very lucky I have a bike still because a lot of the kids in my class had to sell theirs for money. The bikes are being made into scrap metal that will be turned into something really important for the war.

Ooh, I almost forgot to write about the biggest news EVER!!! So this really big war event happened like 4 days ago in Europe. They called it DDay and from what the radio said it was really important to the war. Apparently, the Allies surprised the Axis powers on the beaches of Normandy and took a really important place in Europe. The only thing Momma and I are worried about is that so many pilots were involved. But we are hoping to here from Dad soon because that will make Momma less stressed about it. The radio also said that this meant that the war might be over soon which would mean that Dad gets to come home soon!! Momma is telling me not to get my hopes up but how can I not??? Well, I need to go help Momma make lunch. I probably won't write again until school starts.

Home sick from school

*March 6, 1944*
Today, I woke up with a horrible fever and sore throat so Momma let me stay home from school. I didn't really want to be there anyway so I am glad I am sick. I like being sick from school because Mom treats me extra nice and she lets me lay on the couch out by the radio and listen to programs. Some of them are good, but some of them are definitely not. Luckily, they played a Bing Crosby that I never heard so that was really exciting!!! I had never heard of the musical group that was on it but the lead guys is really funny even though laughing made my stomach hurt even more.

One of the reasons that I didn't want to go to school today even though I am sick is because my teacher was going to talk about the Berlin bombings in class as our current event. The Berlin bombings scare me because my dad is a pilot for the army and I get really nervous every time we talk about planes. The kids in my class always ask if I know where my dad is. Lately, his letters have been coming slower and slower and the postmarks tell us that he is somewhere in England. His last letter said that he was doing training flights with the Royal Air Force which sounds really important. His letters have been talking mostly about the ration problems that they are having. Apparently, Europe is even worse off then us for food and he always writes about missing Mom's cooking. Well, its time for lunch but I will try and write again soon!

It has been two years today.....

*December 15, 1943*

Two years ago, my dad left to go fight the Germans in Europe. He promised he would come back as soon as he could, but I guess they still need him over there. Tomorrow, I turn eleven. I was kind of hoping he was going to be back for my birthday because if he isn't, then he has missed three of my birthdays. Momma says I should be proud of my dad and I am, but I really wish Uncle Sam would let him come home for my birthday. I am really excited for the party tomorrow. Momma saved up her wages from the week for enough sugar to even make a small cake! It won't have frosting, but what a treat to have a cake since I didn't have one last year. Momma even let me invite two friends to the party. Last year, money was so tight that we barely had enough food for us.
Today was quite an interesting day in school. Everyday, Ms.Nells talks about something that is happening with the war. Today, we learned that the Russian army was defeating the Germans somewhere in the west Soviet Union. I always like when she tells us stuff that doesn't have to do with the Americans because then I don't have to worry about dad. But, I am also excited because this is such good news!!!
